Rabid dog reportedly bites 11 in Jembrana, Bali

In just one day, a dog later known to be positive for the rabies virus, reportedly bit eleven people in a Jembrana, Bali village, including people at a high school.

“The dog was like crazy and attacking any person who he met. On average, people were bit in the hands and legs,” said Komang Asa Adi Wiguna, one of the dog bite victims in Dauharu Village, as quoted by Rima News

Wiguna said that in addition to himself, a child and a grandmother was also bitten by the dog, before it ran off and went on a rampage at SMA Negeri 1 Negara last week, on Oct. 1.

“The dog appeared from under the tower, to directly attack one of the students, but could only bite his pants. After that, he bit a handyman/worker who was working on the building here,” Wiguna said on Tuesday. That doesn’t quite tally up to 11, but Tribun Bali also reported the same number of people as having been bit.

After receiving reports of dog bites, officers from the Jembrana Department of Agriculture, Farms, and Animal Husbandry, came to euthanize the dog.

In addition to the biting dog, a number of other street dogs that were known to have contact with the dog in question were also euthanized and samples were taken from them to analyze the rabies virus.

“The number of bites from this dog is indeed quite a lot. We are also vaccinating pet dogs of local residents and we have appealed to people who have pet dogs to vaccinate them to prevent the rabies virus,” said I Wayan Widarsa, head of the Jembrana Department of Agriculture, Farms, and Animal Husbandry.
