A Kuta Police officer is being mourned amid Indonesian Independence Day celebrations.

An officer from Kuta Police’s traffic unit, I Wayan Sudarsa, was found dead on Kuta Beach in front of the Pullman Hotel early on Wednesday morning.

Sudarsa had apparent wounds on his head and his body was discovered around 3:30 am. The officer’s belongings were reportedly found scattered around where his body was lying.

“On his forehead, there were lacerations and scratches on his calves. When found, the victim was still wearing his service uniform,” an unidentified source told Tribun Bali

The source added that there was a broken beer bottle on Sudarsa.

Tribun Bali also reports that witnesses claim to have heard screaming around the time of the incident.

Denpasar Police Chief Hadi Purnomo confirmed the incident separately, saying Denpasar Police is truly saddened by the loss of an officer.

“We are deeply sorry. The case is under investigation,” Purnomo said, without providing much details.
