NTB lawmaker charged with assault after allegedly hitting wife with broom

A lawmaker from West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has been named a suspect in a domestic violence case after he allegedly hit his wife with a broom.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old APS, is reportedly a member of the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) from Dompu regency. Police said today that the case has been handed over to the district attorney’s office.

“This concerns an incident of domestic violence in his household, he hit his wife with a broom. Then the wife filed a report to the police,” Ivan Roland C, who heads the crime investigation unit in Dompu precinct, told Detik.

Following the report filed last December, police say that authorities have tried to mediate the husband and wife, but the latter decided to go through with the legal process.

“We tried the mediation route, but because of one thing or the other, the wife has chosen to proceed with the case. So we have processed it accordingly, now we’re just waiting for the trial to begin,” Ivan said. 

Under the 2004 Eradication of Domestic Violence Law, assault of a spouse is punishable by up to five years in prison.
