Muggers posing at ojek drivers arrested in Legian, Bali

Two alleged muggers have been arrested in Legian, Bali after snatching a Spanish tourist’s bag.

The men were pretending to be motorcycle taxis, propositioning passersby for rides.

The perps have been identified as NT alias Niko, 36 and DAB, alias Sony, 29.

“The mugging occurred on Friday morning. When the victim was walking with a friend. The two actors, Niko and Sony came to offer a motorbike ride. But the victim rejected the offer. When the thieves saw the victim carrying a bag and phone, both actors directly mugged her,” Kuta Police Chief I Wayan Sumara told Tribun Bali on Monday.

The victim, Spanish national Elena Grandes, 28, reported the crime to the police, who apparently had the convenience of using CCTV to track the perps down.

“The next week, the identity of the perps was known and they were arrested in a kos (boardinghouse) in Denpasar,” Sumara said.

The police chief says this new modus operandi for jambret (mugging) is a relatively new style that police haven’t seen much of before.
