A purse-snatcher who was arrested by the Kuta Police yesterday managed to withdraw money using his victim’s ATM card after correctly guessing her PIN, which was her birthday.
In their statement, Kuta Police revealed the suspect’s initials as RR while the victim is identified as RA, 27, who worked at an Indomaret convenience store on Kuta Street in Badung.
Police said RA put her bag inside her office locker last Saturday at around 3pm. After her shift ended at around 11pm, she was shocked to see that her bag had been opened and the purse inside was missing.
She immediately filed a report to the Kuta Police. The authorities managed to capture RR in his residence in South Kuta on Monday at around 8pm.
In total, the suspect, a 39-year-old from West Java, took IDR10 million (US$665) from RA’s bank account in five different withdrawals.
R told the authorities that he keyed in RA’s birthday in DD-MM-YY format as the ATM PIN, gaining access to her account. He said he knew the victim’s birthday from her KTP (ID card), which was also in her purse.
The suspect admitted that he used the money to pay off his debts, buy some clothes, and for boozing at nightclubs.
Under Indonesian law, RR may face up to five years in prison for theft.
