Jl. Legian, the main street in the heart of Bali tourist town Kuta, got shut down early on Monday afternoon, ahead of the Ogoh-Ogoh parade.
Tuesday marks the Balinese New Year Nyepi, the ‘Day of Silence,’ where everyone must stay inside and not let any light or sound out. But Tuesday isn’t the only day where tourists can expect some change-ups in Bali.
Every year on the eve of the holiday, Balinese Hindus parade ogoh-ogoh, giant mythological effigies, through the streets and tourist towns are no exception. Ogoh-ogoh will be paraded in villages all over Bali tonight, but you can of course expect the most road blocks in tourist areas like Kuta.
“Jl. Legian has been closed since 12 pm and is already filled with ogoh-ogoh,” Tribun Bali quoted a municipal police offer as saying on Monday.
Foreign tourists have been gathering around to check out the ogoh-ogoh, the local newspaper observed.
