Just a day after a Chinese tourist drowned in the midst of taking a selfie at Bali’s Nusa Penida, an Italian tourist has fallen from a cliff and broken his leg performing the same photo-taking act on Nusa Ceningan, the next island over.
Italian national Salvatore De Rosa was knocked down by a wave at a cliff-top at Blue Lagoon in Nusa Ceningan, a small island southeast of Bali, on Monday around 11:30am.
When the 26-year-old was busy taking selfies with waves crashing down in the background, a big wave smashed into him and pushed him off a cliff, understood to be about 10 meters high, into the sea.
Local residents at the scene tried to help, but waves made it difficult to descend. The Italian was eventually rescued when a rope was thrown down to him.
Nusa Penida Police Comr. I Ketut Suastika confirmed the incident and said that the Italian was immediately rushed to a clinic in neighboring island Nusa Lembongan, then evacuated to Denpasar by helicopter for further medical treatment.
“He was directly sent to the hospital,” Suastika told Bali Post.
On Sunday, Chinese tourist Qiuwei Anhui was dragged out to sea at the natural infinity pool Angel’s Billabong on Nusa Penida when taking a selfie. Qiuwei drowned and did not survive.
