A 34-year-old Italian national was arrested in Bali’s Badung regency for alleged possession of cocaine, following tips to the police from local residents.

The suspect, FD, was arrested at his villa in North Kuta last Thursday, police said, where they found 94 grams of cocaine stashed inside a wallet that was hidden in a water dispenser.

Budi Artama, who heads the narcotics unit at Badung precinct, said authorities are still investigating origins of the illegal drugs, which are estimated to be worth IDR400 million (US$27,900).

“We must do a thorough investigation and that requires time,” Budi said in a statement.

FD came to Bali as a tourist, but has not been able to return home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he added.

Under Indonesia’s drug laws, FD faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison for his crime.
