A 61-year-old convict from Germany gave himself up to the authorities in Bali this week, as he is set to finally serve his sentence for a fraud case in 2012.

The convict, identified as Karl Gulther Meyer, turned himself in to the District Attorney Office (Kejari) in Buleleng regency on Monday afternoon, and is now in custody.

“The convict named Karl Gulther Meyer was on Kejari Buleleng’s wanted list and he’s been a fugitive for seven years,” Head of Intelligence at Kejari Buleleng, Anak Agung Ngurah Jayalantara, said yesterday.

Ngurah said that Meyer fled to Germany before prosecutors filed an appeal for his case. Before Meyer turned himself in on Monday, Kejari Buleleng was reportedly alerted to the fact that he had recently returned to Indonesia to visit his family in Bali and Lombok.

In 2012, an American national identified as MB reported Meyer to the police. According to MB, Meyer sold hotel shares worth IDR9.3 billion (US$649,509) in 2003 to him but failed to hand over the shares. The Singaraja District Court in August sentenced Meyer to 18 months in prison, which he appealed.

The Bali High Court acquitted Meyer later that year, and he immediately returned to Germany following the decision. However, the public prosecutor in the case filed a cassation petition to the Supreme Court, and Meyer was sentenced to two years in prison in 2014.
