Foreign woman destroys traditional instruments in Gianyar rampage, police suspect blowup triggered by her running out of money

An unidentified woman, believed to be Russian, has caused a scene in Bali’s Gianyar regency, destroying some traditional gamelan instruments in her path, allegedly going on a rampage when she ran out of money.

The woman quickly incited anger from local residents when she started breaking the percussion instruments in Bale Banjar Pande, Blahbatuh.

But outrage quickly turned to sympathy for the woman when it became understood that she may be suffering from an episode triggered by her running out of money, local resident Made Sudiangga told Tribun Bali.

“We repeatedly asked for her name. She was always changing it. She said her names were Liza and Maria. When asked about her origin, she said Russia,” Sudiangga said earlier today.

The woman said she didn’t know where she was staying in Bali, so Sudiangga said he shared the woman’s photo around different villas and accommodations around Blahbatuh. When that didn’t yield any results, he turned her over to the Gianyar Civil Service Police Unit.

And now, Gianyar Civil Service Police Unit Chief Cok Agusnawa says the woman will be submitted to social services for further handling.

“The reason she is depressed is because she ran out of money, so we’ve given her over to social services for further treatment,” Agusnawa said.

The woman is currently being treated at the hospital for psychiatric health in Bangli.

Head of the control and countermeasures section against non-communicable diseases of Gianyar regency Dewa Oka Harimbawa said that while he cannot confirm the psychological condition of the woman, he suspects she suffers from a mental disorder, adding that she will continue to be monitored for the time being.
