Five Indonesian citizens were reportedly deported from Turkey to Bali because they appeared to have been ready to join ISIS.
The five were secured at Bali Ngurah Rai Airport on Tuesday night, around 10:15 pm.
Bali Police head spokesman Superintendent Hengky Widjaja confirmed the news with the local press.
“It’s true that there are citizens who are being questioned about being deported from Turkey,” Widjaja said on Wednesday, as quoted by Tribun Bali.
The five departed from Jakarta to Thailand on August 15, 2016, according to reports. From Thailand, they flew to Turkey and were ultimately captured by Turkish soldiers in a safe house during a raid where they were identified as having the intent to join ISIS.
After the raid, the five were arrested and deported to Indonesia from Istanbul via Dubai.
Two of the five people are reportedly women.
This isn’t the first time we’ve had Indonesian citizens deported to Bali for associating with ISIS. Last year, three citizens were shipped back to Bali over alleged ISIS links.
