A female emcee reportedly made an appearance at an event attended by Bali Governor Wayan Koster yesterday, in what appears to be an attempt to brush off accusations of sexism against the top official.

Earlier this month, Koster was accused of blatant sexism online by Balinese emcee and TV host Putu Dessy Fridayanthi, posts of which quickly went viral. According to Dessy, Koster was particularly specific about prohibiting women from literally taking the stage at his events.

Yesterday’s event, which was live streamed on the Bali Provincial Government’s official YouTube channel, seemed intent on debunking that. It’s one way to address accusations of sexism, we suppose.

There have been no official comments addressing the controversy thus far, even though it sparked public outrage and elicited comments from public figures, including Balinese designer and politician Niluh Djelantik.

Dessy had alleged that the lack of women hosting and performing at events attended by Koster became commonplace since he took the governor seat in 2018, and Niluh also said that he’s received similar complaints from others.
