One of the two suspected criminals who escaped from a Denpasar Police detention cell on Sunday was recaptured yesterday morning in South Denpasar.

Twenty-two-year old Christoni Kaledi Bonung managed to sneak past snoozing guards on Sunday with fellow inmate, Jemmy Sinaga, after allegedly using hypnosis to send them to sleep. One or both of the prisoners had even been bold enough to swipe the officers’ cell phones from the table on their way out.

Denpasar Police Chief Ruddi Setiawan said that yesterday’s arrest came about after local residents reported 4 cell phones being stolen from a home in the area.

Bonung, a repeat offender of cell phone theft, was reportedly caught red-handed by angry residents and had fled down a nearby alleyway. Police were called to the scene and Bonung was found hiding in a corner of the same alleyway at around 3:30am.

After questioning at the crime scene, police discovered that the suspect was in fact one of the detainees who had escaped during the wee hours of Sunday.

“He was chased by residents after being caught stealing their cell phones. Initially, the residents did not know that he was an escaped prisoner but after being secured by officers and examined, we can confirm that he is a runaway prisoner,” said Setiawan to Nusa Bali yesterday afternoon.

Setiawan said his officers would be carrying out a thorough examination of Bonung, and hoped to also find out exactly how he managed to escape.

Police are still searching for the other escaped prisoner, 37-year old Jemmy Sinaga from East Java.
