A 40-year-old man survived a 12-meter fall when he plunged into a well in Jungutan Village, Karangasem yesterday.

Wayan Sukarya amazingly walked away relatively unscathed, suffering bruises on his legs and throughout his body.

Made Suana, Sukarya’s younger brother, said that he heard the victim’s screams when he was searching for firewood. He immediately alerted other locals, who came to help and called the Karangasem Search and Rescue Agency.

It took the party 40 minutes to evacuate Sukarya from the well, and he was eventually pulled out at around 3:30pm. The well was reportedly empty and so there were few obstacles to the evacuation.

Sukarya was immediately rushed to the nearest local community health center for further medical attention.

Sukarya reportedly makes a living climbing coconut trees to pick coconuts. It’s unclear how he fell into the well, but Suana said that his brother told him that he suffered a stomach ache before the incident.

A villager named Nengah Toya said that following the incident, locals are going to work together to board up the empty well to prevent more tragedy.

“The dead well is dangerous – [it’s like] asking for victims,” he said.
