A bus carrying tourists from China flipped over when driving in Bali’s Bukit Peninsula on Tuesday.

The bus had been carrying 16 passengers when it overturned east of the border between Kutuh Village and Ungasan.

Traveling eastbound, it’s alleged that the bus was preparing to shift down to go up hill, when suddenly a vehicle coming from the opposite direction was driving close to the center of the road, so the bus tried to stop, but the brakes failed. As a result the bus shot backwards, and eventually rolled over as the driver swerved.

Denpasar Traffic Police Comr. Rahmawaty Ismail confirmed the accident, saying no one was killed.

“Passengers were only wounded,” Ismail said on Wednesday, as quoted by Bali Post.

Injured passengers have reportedly been sent to a hospital in Jimbaran for medical attention.

PT Jasa Raharja Branch Bali, a state-owned insurance company will be covering the costs of the accident, including hospital bills to a certain threshold, according to the Bali Branch head of Operational Services, Triadi.

“For the cost of care and treatment, it is borne by Jasa Raharja, a maximum of IDR 20 million (US$1,400). We have also made a statement as a guarantor to the hospital,” he explained.

With its rolling hills, narrow roads, and steep inclines, the Bukit Peninusla is no stranger to bus accidents. Earlier this year in April, a bus experienced brake failure on Jl. Uluwatu on the hill in front of GWK and caused a nine-vehicle chain collision, killing one person.
