BBPOM finds more and more cosmetics with harmful chemicals in Bali each year

Every year, the number of cosmetic products testing positive for harmful ingredients in the Bali area is increasing, the national food and drug monitoring agency (BBPOM) has found.

So if were thinking of saving a little cash and buying some local makeup instead of your international brands like Clinique or Mac, then you might want to think again and just splurge on the standardized stuff.

In 2014, BPPOM Bali found and destroyed as many as 3,750 unregulated cosmetics products worth an estimated value of Rp 94 million.

While in 2015, that figure increased almost two-fold, to 6,584 cosmetics products destroyed, with a value of Rp 199.6 million.

Head of BPPOM Bali, Endang Widowati said Bali’s experienced this increase of local, unregulated cosmetics products as the island’s seen an increased demand for makeup. The cosmetics were not produced in Bali, but are from within Indonesia, Widowati told Tribun Bali on Thursday.

Mercury is the most dangerous chemical among the various hazardous substances found in Bali cosmetics, according to Widowati. Ick!

Widowati says monitoring coordinated between BPPOM and police will increase in Jembrana, West Bali—the main port town for the Java crossing.
