A litter of puppies was found in a plastic bag dumped in a rice field ditch in Singapadu, Gianyar on Thursday night.
The litter of five newborns was discovered by a group of herpers out looking for snakes near Bali Bird Park.
The dogs, just days old with their eyes still closed, were discovered when the herpers, who were searching for Mangrove cat snakes at the time, heard the dogs’ cries for their mother. The dogs were bunched together in a plastic bag, cold and shivering.
The pups were retrieved from the ditch by the leader of the group, who used a bag that had just an hour earlier carried a python rescued from the inside of a car, to ferry them back to Bali Reptile Rescue HQ. Once safely there, they were fed critical care milk for young mammals.
Bali Reptile Rescue posted this video on Facebook after the puppy rescue, then brought the dogs to Bali Animal Welfare Association the next day.
A matter of hours later, all five pups had found a new ‘furever’ home at Goa Gajah, according to BAWA.
Unfortunately in Bali where the street dog population is large and pet owners often leave dogs unsterilized, reports are all too common of unwanted puppies getting dumped and abandoned.
While there are a handful of NGOs and kind-hearted individuals rescuing dogs in need, too often, helpless puppies like these really are left for dead.
We’re so glad that these fresh pups got a happy ending.
