Remember the horrifying experience described by a Singaporean couple who claimed to have been robbed and harassed during their vacation in Bali? Local police say they arrested the two men behind the alleged crime this week.
Andi Fairan from the Bali Police told Detik yesterday that the suspects, identified as I Wayan Adiasa (Dayuh) and Komang Joni (Mang Ewes), were arrested on Tuesday.
“During interrogation, Dayuh admitted to having robbed [from the Singaporean couple] with his partner, Mang Ewes,” Andi told reporters.
Andi explained that both Dayuh and Mang Ewes, who were riding a scooter, had been stalking the couple, Eugene Aathar and Dolly Ho, while they, too, were on a scooter. Dayuh then snatched Ho’s phone before kicking both of them off their ride. The incident reportedly took place on Jl. Legian, Kuta.
Aathar and Ho detailed the incident in a Straits Times article last month, which quickly went viral and got picked up by several Indonesian media outlets as well. Aathar reportedly sustained minor injuries from falling off the bike, while Ho fractured her shoulder and suffered a minor concussion.
The couple was able to return to their home country soon after, which they attributed to having bought travel insurance before their trip.
Dayuh and Mang Ewes admitted to authorities that the stolen phone was then sold for IDR 2.2 million (USD 153).
“The money was then used for their daily expenses. Mang Ewes said he used the money to buy milk for his children, and that this was his first time stealing,” Andi said.
