Tourism numbers may be looking down for Bali in the moment in the giant volcano-shaped shadow casted by the island’s Mount Agung, but it turns out the Indonesian island was one of the most searched destinations on Google throughout 2017.
Not hard to believe, after all, Bali was named TripAdvisor’s best world destination earlier this year.
As a part of its annual Google Trends release, the search engine shared its data on the world’s top search destinations for 2017 and Bali came in at number eight, just after Turks and Caicos and sliding in right before Cancun.
But looking at the search list, it seems world events probably influenced these searches as Las Vegas tops the list following the deadly shooting in October and Barcelona ranks number two, following a controversial bid for Catalan secession, also in October.
Famous paradise destination as it is, Bali may have been on this list, if not for its erupting volcano, but who knows, maybe Agung did have something to do with “Bali” ranking in the top ten destination searches.
Anyway, here’s the complete top ten list:
1. Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
2. Barcelona, Spain
3. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, United States
4. Aspen, Colorado, United States
5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
6. Maldives
7. Turks and Caicos
8. Bali, Indonesia
9. Cancun, Mexico
10. Bermuda
