Bali authorities said a total of six foreign nationals were arrested since November in alleged drug smuggling attempts.

“Between November to December, the monitoring team from the customs and excise office were able to foil smuggling attempts carried out by foreign nationals of Hong Kong, Singapore, Chile, and others, “ Wahid Kurniawan, spokesman from Bali’s customs and excise directorate-general said at a press conference earlier today.

Wahid said that the biggest busts were brought into Indonesia by a 43-year-old Singaporean national identified by his initials PKH and a 19-year-old Hong Kong national identified by his initials MCK, who had 3.2 kilograms and 4 kilograms of shabu (crystal meth), respectively.

PKH and MCK were arrested on different occasions. The former allegedly hid shabu packages in the lining of his luggage, whereas the latter allegedly hid the illegal goods in a dog food package.

Another case involves a 36-year-old Thai national, identified by his initials PK, who was arrested at the Ngurah Rai International Airport in early November after officers found more than 20 grams of marijuana hidden in his underwear.

“Officers found a plastic package containing cut-ups of the leaf hidden inside the underwear he was wearing,” Himawan Indarjo, who heads the customs office in Ngurah Rai International Airport, told reporters.

The six foreigners were individually charged with violation of Indonesia’s 2009 Narcotics Law, which carries a minimum prison sentence of five years.
