‘Digital nomads’ who can work remotely, from anywhere in the world are flocking to Bali, cyber fraudsters included, apparently.

Ngurah Rai Bali Province Immigration Class I deported 55 Chinese and one Taiwanese national over their involvement in cyber fraud.

“Today, at 9am, we immediately deported the Chinese and Taiwanese nationals (a flight) to Tianjin, China,” head of Ngurah Rai Class I Immigration Ari Budjianto said from Bali’s airport on Friday.

These 56 foreigners will be blacklisted so they cannot come back to Indonesia, especially Bali, again, says Budjianto.

Most of the Chinese in this group were in Bali on expired tourist visas and had come to Indonesia in November and December 2017.

“On average, their stay permits were exhausted, because the tourist visa is only valid for 30 days,” he said.

Budjianto says helping immigration better monitor the activities of foreigners on the island, is an online application that goes out to hotels that has the accommodation immediately report the foreigners staying at their place.

“This is one of the forms of supervision that Immigration does,” Budjianto said.

At least 48 of the deported party were arrested from a series of raids in January–which allegedly got a little messy with police’s handling of journalists at the scene.
