Police in Denpasar yesterday arrested three men in connection with the assault of a couple on May 10.
At around 10pm on the day of the assault, police said FRDO, 27, MFK, 26, and TRH, 26, were driving in a car on Jalan Mahendradatta in Denpasar. As they were heading towards a red light, they came side-by-side with a motorcycle driven by AHR, 22, who was with his girlfriend LS, 26.
The suspects antagonized the couple, including by flipping their middle fingers towards the victims. When the vehicles came to a stop at the red light, FRDO, MFK and TRH got out of their car and assaulted AHR.
The assailants also beat LS when she pleaded for them to stop attacking her boyfriend. The three men eventually got back in the car and drove away.
Locals who later arrived at the scene took AHR and LS to a nearby hospital for their injuries. The couple then reported the assault to the police.
The West Denpasar Police eventually arrested two of the assailants at a hotel in Kuta, and the other at his home in Denpasar yesterday.
“The motive of the suspects in carrying out the assault was that they were all under the influence of alcohol,” West Denpasar Police Crime Investigation Unit Head Kevin Mario Imanuel said today.
The suspects may face up to five-and-a-half years in prison each for assault under the Criminal Code (KUHP). Police have not said whether or not they would be charged for driving under the influence as well.
