2 more passengers killed in West Bali on same road as 8 victim minibus crash during travels home for Lebaran

Another two people have died on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road, headed home to Java from Bali for Lebaran.

The deadly accident occurred at KM 123-124 in the early hours of Wednesday, when the driver of a motorbike—allegedly drowsy—crashed into a truck coming from the opposite direction.

Kairul Mukhtar, 19, and Taufik had been driving by motorbike on the way from East Denpasar to the West Bali port town of Gilimanuk at a high speed.

Mukhtar died at the scene from impact, while Taufik was rushed to a clinic in Gilimanuk, but didn’t make it, reports local newspaper Tribun Bali

The accident comes right after eight men were killed on Saturday on the same road, within the same stretch of a couple of kilometers, when their minibus crashed into an oncoming truck. The driver—who was amongst the fatalities—was allegedly fatigued while driving.

The accidents are a harsh reminder of the dangers of traveling on the road with the approaching Idul Fitri holiday, when Muslims from across the country will be headed home en masse.

Over 40 million Indonesians are expected to be on the road—no doubt making for intense traffic—migrating to their hometowns for the big holiday marking the end of the Ramadan fasting month, set for June 25. Over 360 deaths were reported during the holiday last year.
