Eight people were killed in West Bali on Saturday night when a minibus carrying 13 passengers (including the driver) crashed into a truck.

The accident happened on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk road, around KM 121-122 in Bali’s Jembrana regency.

The bus, traveling from east to west, suddenly hit the truck which was coming from the opposite direction, near the West Bali National Park around 9pm.

One of the passengers reportedly died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.

The minibus’ driver was reportedly among the eight victims killed in the crash. Three more were seriously injured.

Gilimanuk Police Chief Anak Agung Gede Arka confirmed the accident and fatalities to the local press.

The deadly crash is a timely reminder of the dangers of traveling on the road with the approaching Idul Fitri holiday.

Over 40 million Indonesians are expected to be on the road, migrating to their hometowns for the big holiday marking the end of the Ramadan fasting month, set for June 25. Over 360 deaths were reported during the holiday last year, according to AAP.

The 12 minibus passengers traveling from Bali on Saturday night had been headed to East Java for Lebaran festivities when the accident happened.

Police suspect the minibus driver lost control of the vehicle as a result of fatigue.
