The Yangon Water Bus system is set to get two new jetties, which will bring the total number of stops along Yangon’s waterways to eight. The new stops will be located near Maha Bandoola Bridge in Dawbon Township and near Shwepyitha Bridge in Hlaingthaya Township.
“The Yangon Water Bus currently operates along the Insein-Botataung route. Later on, authorities are planning to run between Maha Bandoola Bridge, Shwepyitha-Hlaingthaya, and Aung Zeya Bridge. The authorities are also planning to run along Nga Moe Yeik Creek. This long-term project will be implemented next year,” said Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA) secretary Dr. Maung Aung. YRTA is making arrangements for the construction of the two newest jetties.
Journeys from the new stops will cost K300 per ride and will be payable using a pay card.
The service currently runs from Insein to Botataung and stops at Shwepadauk, Kyimyindaing, Lanthit, and Pansodan jetties. It reportedly makes 19 round trips per day between 6am and 8pm.
The Yangon Water Bus system opened in early October and has been marketed as a solution to Yangon’s stifling traffic problems. However, the early days of the service have been marked by irregular arrivals and passengers who take the trips for novelty rather than transportation.
