After several delays, Yangon’s newest public transportation option will begin shuttling passengers along the city’s surrounding waterways this Friday.

The initial fleet will include 16 vessels, which will make six stops along the Hlaingthaya-Insein-Botataung route, Myanmar state media reported yesterday.

Fares will range from K300 for a portion of the route to K500 for the entirety of the route. Monks and nuns, however, will ride for free.

Boats will run every 20 minutes from 6am to 6:30pm.

In addition to the current fleet, which was built in Thailand and Australia, an additional 20 vessels are being built in Myanmar.

Yangon Water Bus is a project of the Tint Tint Myanmar Company, which operates cruises on the Ayeyawady and Chindwin rivers. The project was initially viewed with skepticism by policymakers who championed a revamped bus service as the solution to Yangon’s transportation woes. Ultimately, however, the service was integrated into the city’s new public transportation plans.

A launch ceremony will be held on Friday at 7am at Botataung Jetty.
