Yangon citizen takes it upon himself to clean up recreational space underneath Myaynigone flyover

Last week, we reported that both citizens and government officials were irritated by the fact that the new public recreational area under the Myaynigone flyover had been defaced by trash and betel nut.

Well, over the weekend, one citizen decided that instead of just sitting around and complaining, he would actually do something about it.

In a post on Facebook, user Minn Myay Kha wrote that he headed over to the space to give it a proper cleaning on Saturday night. As you can expect, the task took up a good chunk of his time — from 11 pm until 4 am, to be exact.

“It took me quite a while. When I got there, the first thing I did was pick up the trash. There was leftover food, water bottles, and beer bottles. I picked up as much as I could,” he wrote.

“I even found a broom in the corner so I did some sweeping.”

But he didn’t just stop at the garbage. In fact, Minn Myay Kha even went so far as to try to clean up the betel nut spit strewn across the area.

“The betel nut spit took a lot of scrubbing with soap. Even with that, there was still a lot [of spit] that I couldn’t clean, probably because it’d been there for too long. When I come back next week, I’ll use tile stain remover.”

Minn Myay Kha also wrote that he realizes that people have busy lives, but he too had to make the time to do this.

“I tried my best, but there are still things that I couldn’t do on my own. I invite everyone else to get involved.”

He finished the post with a general call for citizens to be more mindful about where they throw their garbage.

“What I want to say is that even if you don’t want to pick up the trash, don’t toss it around. I don’t mean just in this area either. Wherever you are, please always put your trash in the trash bins.”

“I think that in the future, they [the YCDC] will put trash bins there [under the flyover] and there will be cleaning crews. Until then, let’s try our best to maintain this place.”

Under the post, some commenters wrote that what Minn Myay Kha was doing was a waste of time, but we hope that that kind of attitude won’t deter the young man any time soon.

We really don’t have much to add except to reiterate what everyone who’s commented and shared the post have said, namely, that this was an awesome thing to do. Bravo, young man.
