UPDATE: Escaped Insein Prison inmate caught

An inmate from Insein Prison who escaped last week has now been caught, authorities confirmed.

The fugitive, Kyi Aye (also known as Mawsi), gave authorities the slip while receiving treatment for fistula disease at Insein General Hospital on November 10. Around 2am, Kyi Aye somehow managed to remove his chains and flee the hospital, according to The Voice.

On November 13, authorities found Kyi Aye and his wife, 45-year-old Daw Phyu Phyu Win, in the Soe San Motel, located in the town of Thazi, located approximately 500 kilometers from Yangon. Kyi Aye is currently being held by the Thazi Township police and will be transferred back to the Yangon Region police headquarters.

He is expected to continue serving his 40-year sentence for drug-related crimes.

The police deserve a pat on the back for restoring the apparently non-violent offender to his place in Yangon’s notoriously brutal prison. Now about that other prisoner who escaped in October while serving time for murder…
