Suspect caught in murder of young girl found on Yangon train tracks

On Friday, police arrested a man for allegedly being involved in the murder of a 10-year-old girl in Yangon.

Pyargalaung, also known as Kyaw Gyi, 29, is the victim’s aunt’s ex-boyfriend. He is charged with slashing the young girl’s throat and leaving her body on the section of the railway between Hanthawady Station and Kamayut Station.

An investigation revealed that the victim had lived in Hlaing Thar Yar Township with her mother. Together, the mother and daughter sold flowers under the Hle Dan flyover.

The victim’s mother told authorities that Kyaw Gyi had asked if the young girl could join him when he went to beg for money on the streets that night so that he wouldn’t be alone.

However, he came back on his own around 7:45pm. When questioned, he told the victim’s mother that the girl had gone back ahead of him.

When the mother said that her daughter hadn’t come home, Kyaw Gyi told her that he would go back out in the direction of Inya Lake to find her.

The mother later identified her daughter through a photo that the police released. She also recognized a cotton bag that belonged to Kyaw Gyi next to her daughter’s body in the photo.

Once she reported this, members of the Yangon Region police force arrested Kyaw Gyi at his house in Dala Township.

He is currently being detained at the station while awaiting trial.
