Residents of Taunggyi, the capital of Shan State, are seeking answers about the alleged murder of two men, one woman, and one child on the outskirts of the city on Aug. 20, but local police say they have received no official information about the case.

The four victims, including two military officers and the wife and daughter of a different military officer, are said to have been killed near a cave west of the Taunggyi Institute of Medicine. Locals told Eleven that the four were stationed with a local engineering corps unit.

“A warrant officer class-2, a sergeant, the wife of a warrant officer class-1, and her child have been killed. Her husband, the warrant officer class-1, was last seen going to the school to take his child home at that time. The woman’s body was broken apart in pieces, and the child has an open wound in her stomach, which made her intestines fall out,” one local resident said.

Their bodies were reportedly taken to a military hospital.

However, when reporters asked the local administration office for information about the case, officials said they were not familiar with the details of the case because a telegraph about it had not arrived yet. On Tuesday, state and city police said they had also received no information about the case.

“Taking photographs is prohibited in the area, as [a state of emergency under] Section 144 was issued in some areas,” Police Major Maung Maung Naing told Eleven. “Police cannot conduct investigations in those areas…There is no such case concerning this matter lodged at our police station.”

Win Naing Soe from the Taunggyi Rule of Law Network said: “We know the victims’ names, but we cannot say them as [the case] has not been officially announced.”
