Powering down: Blackouts hitting Yangon until Thursday

Might want to quickly check your candle supply. There will be sporadic blackouts throughout Yangon starting today and continuing through Thursday, according to the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation’s (YESC) Facebook page.

The city will be going black (in sections) as YESC does maintenance work on the distribution transformer that handles the entire city’s electricity and replaces power lines across Yangon.

The planned blackouts will occur on a rotating basis, with the main maintenance work on the distribution transformer taking place Thursday from 9:00am to 12:00am, so plan accordingly for at least three hours without electricity.

The following neighborhoods will be affected: Thaketa, North Okkalapa, Tarmwe, Mingalar Taung Nyunt, North Dagon, South Dagon, Dagon Seikkan, East Dagon, Yankin, Pazundaung, South Okkalapa, Thingangyun, Botathaung, Karmayut, Kyimindaing, Mayangone, Ahlone, Pabedan, Sanchaung, Taik kyi, Insein, Mingalardon, Hlegu, Shwepyithar, Htauk Kyant, Thandebin, Da Bon, Phaung Gyi, Myaung Da Ga, Hlaing Thar Yar, and Ahpyauk.

The YESC is fighting a year-round uphill battle to renovate and modernize Yangon’s electricity grid in the months leading up to the monsoon season, when the highest numbers of electrocutions occur in the city.

Just in the last four months, a 13 year old boy and two students from the University of Medicine died in three separate incidents, prompting 4,500 students from 13 universities to file a petition demanding government accountability in these electrocution cases.
