Police retrieve evidence tossed by suspect, arrest another in Iron Rose editor’s death

Police have apprehended another suspect in the death of Iron Rose journal editor Wai Yan Hein, the Yangon Police Force confirmed on Facebook over the weekend.

Wai Yan Hein, 27, was found stabbed to death inside his Pazundaung office on April 16. Authorities arrested Aung Ko Ko, an officer for a Singaporean shipping company, in relation to the murder, which was allegedly over an affair between Wai Yan Hein and Aung Ko Ko’s wife, Al Ni.

According to police, Aung Ko Ko became suspicious of his wife after spotting Wai Yan Hein’s car near his home in Yangon, and later found out that the two were having an affair. Aung Ko Ko then reportedly went to Wai Yan Hein’s office on April 14, killed him, and took his laptop and iPhone. On April 19, authorities picked him up in Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay Region, where his parents live.

During the interrogation, Aung Ko Ko admitted to tossing the Toshiba laptop and iPhone SE into Pyin Oo Lwin’s Kandawlay Lake. Working together with a group of divers, police were able to retrieve the laptop on Friday evening, and the phone the following Saturday afternoon.

Aung Ko Ko also confessed that his friend Pyae Thu Naing had been present at the time of the crime and had taken part in the murder. Pyae Thu Naing was arrested on Saturday and is currently being investigated.

Additionally, the Yangon Police Force revealed that hairs found at the crime scene have been sent to a lab to be tested against the hairs of the two suspects.
