A candidate for the National League for Democracy is being treated for stab wounds in Yangon General Hospital after an alleged attack on his campaign convoy that has left at least three party members wounded.

NLD sources say that Naing Ngan Lin was assaulted while traveling on a float in Thaketa Township at around 9pm on Thursday. He is seeking a seat in Yangon’s regional parliament.

According to descriptions of the attack that police have yet to verify, three men – one with a sword and two with wooden sticks – emerged from their home to confront the NLD members.

Ngain Ngan Lin received the worst of it, sources say, and is in critical condition at the hospital, where NLD members, journalists and others have converged.

As of very early Friday morning, NLD supporters and candidates had gathered at a police station in Thaketa Township to seek answers.
