Officials are discussing possibly turning state-owned telco MPT into a public corporation, the company’s deputy general manager Thein Hote told The Voice.
However, executives are also taking into account that a large chunk of time would be required to successfully implement the complicated transition.
In 2014, MPT formed a partnership with Japan’s KDDI telco and Sumitomo Corporation to improve their facilities in Myanmar. Earlier this year, they also announced plans to invest USD2 billion over the next 10 years to extend its nationwide network and services.
To date, MPT boasts approximately 21 million subscribers, making them the biggest of the three telcos — the other two being Ooredoo and Telenor — currently operating in Myanmar.
Most recently, the government granted a tender to the country’s fourth operator, Vietnam-based telco Viettel.
