More robberies, fewer murders in Yangon so far this year

Good and bad news in the world of Yangon crime.

The number of robberies reported in the city so far this year is up on 2014, but there have been fewer murders.

Government statistics published in state-run Global New Light of Myanmar show 23 robberies from January to June – not counting burglaries – up from 18 in 2014.

There were 87 murder cases, down from 102 last year. The township with the most was Mingaladon, followed by Hlinethaya and Twantay.

Yangon recorded 186 murders last year, giving the city a murder rate of about 3.2 per 100,000 people. That’s about the same as Glasgow, Scotland and Brussels, Belgium.

A total of 79 cases of rape have been reported so far this year – there were 73 last year.

There were just seven reported burglaries, down from 13.
