Electronic toll booths might be coming to the Yangon-Mandalay Highway

Authorities are drawing up plans to implement an electronic toll collection system along the Yangon-Mandalay highway, reports Eleven.

The Ministry of Construction recently announced that any companies interested in setting up the system could submit proposals which must include the company license, information on any relevant experience, and design and construction plans for their proposed system.

Electronic toll collection systems are generally used to make toll collection more efficient. When a car passes by the toll booth, the system automatically deduces the toll fee from registered cars and alerts the authorities of unregistered cars.

Authorities estimate that over 20,000 vehicles use the 587 kilometer-long highway on any given day. If carried out, the electronic toll system would be part of the government’s larger highway improvement plans that are meant to improve road conditions and more importantly, reduce the high number of vehicular accidents that take place on the nicknamed ‘Death Highway’.
