Brief pandemonium at poll as Aung San Suu Kyi casts historic vote

The National League for Democracy’s globally famous icon Aung san Suu Kyi has cast her historic vote in Myanmar’s election.

This is the first time Suu Kyi has voted in person during a general election.

Hundreds of journalists were there to capture the history. The scrum was so intense an elderly woman had to be pulled out of it.

Suu Kyi was voting at a school turned polling station in Bahan Township, where she lives.

Authorities earlier said she would have to stand in line like everybody else, but that did not happen (probably a good idea). She passed straight through and left in around 10 minutes.

Afterwards, she plans on going to her constituency in Kawhmu on the outskirts of Yangon.

The NLD is expected to dominate the ruling Union Solidarity and Development party in today’s vote.
