Eighteen people were injured when a Yangon Bus Service (YBS) vehicle collided with a van on Pyay Road in Mingaladon Township on Monday.

The two vehicles hit each other as they were both trying to turn at the same traffic light. The injured included 14 passengers on the YBS No. 91 bus and four people in the Grand Starex van.

The Pale Myoe Thit Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to the accident and transported the injured people to nearby hospitals. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Police are still working to identify the driver responsible for the collision.

YBS vehicles have been involved in several crashes since the service was launched last year. In Jan. 2017, six people were injured when a YBS bus rammed another YBS bus from behind.

In July 2017, another collision between two YBS buses killed 10 people, leading to the abolition of the No. 55 line and widespread public criticism of the Yangon Region Transport Authority.

Both of these accidents were also in Mingaladon Township.

Yangon’s road accident rate was described as an “epidemic” by experts at a policy dialogue in Feb. 2017.

Myanmar’s roads claim an average of 12 lives every day.
