Celebrate (belated) World Book Day at the British Council center tomorrow

World Book Day might’ve already passed (the official day was yesterday on April 23), but the British Council center in Yangon is celebrating it a few days late, and parents, siblings, grandparents, and anyone else tasked with babysitting young children might want to head over to the center tomorrow.

Throughout the day, there will be activities for kids aged 5 to 10. Things kick off at 10am with an age-group based coloring contest where five winners from each group will win prizes. After what will undoubtedly be some intense coloring, children can relax during storytime which starts at 2pm..

For older audiences, renowned author, human rights activist, and former PEN Myanmar President Ma Thida will hold a talk at 5pm under the topic “Let’s read for the freedom of our mind and soul.” Ma Thida was sentenced to 20 years in Insein Prison in 1993 for political dissent, and later wrote a memoir titled Sanchaung, Insein, Harvard about her early life in Yangon, years in Insein, and time in the United States following her release from prison.

If you’d like to take part in celebrating all things books, make sure to pre-register at the British Council (deadline is today!) in person, by emailing library enquiries@mm.britishcouncil.org, or calling them at 254658 or 256290 (ext. 3316).

Happy (belated) World Book Day, everyone!
