In a tragic turn of events, Muhammad Hambali Sumathi lost his life yesterday after a freak accident transpired during his physical education class at Geylang Methodist Secondary School. The Secondary 1 student was an avid Manchester United fan and had dreams of becoming a pro footballer — he was a budding goalkeeper on the school team — but sadly, he died while playing the sport he loved.

Hambali had been playing five-on-five football on the school field with his classmates, when he jumped for the crossbar of the goal post and clung onto it to do a pull-up. Unfortunately, he fell backwards and the goal post collapsed onto him, hitting his head. Four students immediately rushed over to lift the heavy goal post off their classmate.

But Hambali had suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead later on at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, despite the paramedics’ attempts to resuscitate him. He was the fifth of seven siblings and the younger brother of local singer Sarah Aqilah.

According to The Straits Times, Hambali’s father immediately took leave from his housekeeping job to see his son when he heard the news from the school principal. His mother was distraught and fainted twice upon hearing about her son’s death.

The school field has since been closed to facilitate police investigations, and the case has been classified as an unnatural death, reports TODAY. Hambali will be buried this afternoon at the Chua Chu Kang Muslim cemetery.
