Another day, another python encounter. This time, however, the snake wasn’t found in a toilet bowl or on a housing estate lamp post — it was curled up in someone’s house, trying to eat a pet bird.
Melvin Yap awoke to his wife screaming yesterday morning at their home along Jalan Loyang Besar when a 1.5-meter long reticulated python made an unexpected house visit. Speaking to The Straits Times, the 46-year-old said that his wife came back from her night shift to find the snake wrapped around the family pet bird’s cage, while the poor petrified bird hid in a corner.
Fortunately, the snake was said to be “quite docile, quite shy” — it willingly entered a plastic bag after being nudged with a stick by Yap.
The Monday morning mayhem ended peacefully with the snake kept in a fish tank before it was handed over to the Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (Acres) that same afternoon.
Reticulated pythons are pretty common in Singapore and it’s not surprising that they can end up in urban areas — especially so at Jalan Loyang Besar, which is located near a forested area and Pasir Ris Park. But the worst cold-blooded event anyone can experience is when these creatures lurk inside toilet bowls and bite your privates.
