Every square foot counts when you live in a country as small as Singapore — and no one understands space constraints better than HDB residents, some of whom have made headlines this past year for building an actual koi fish aquarium on a staircase and decorating their common corridor in 101 Dalmatians-themed embellishments to usher in the Year of the Dog.

This time round, it’s a pair of neighbors that caught the eye of a netizen, who snapped a photo of the common space outside their flat and blasted it out to viral fame. (Dude also cleverly took the opportunity to, er, do a quick shout-out for his family’s business.)

Instead of the usual concrete grey emptiness filled by an occasional lonely shoe rack, these two HDB dwellers got pretty creative in decorating their common area, turning it into a cozy relaxation nook, complete with a mini garden of potted plants and a little deck with a table and two chairs overlooking the block’s surroundings.

Not sure if the neighbors know each other or they’re just totally into the kampong spirit of old, but hey, this being Singapore — as long as no one complains, right?

In the online sphere, netizens chimed in to (mostly) express praise for the display of creativity.
