The state of salted egg things aren’t very good right now thanks to deep-fried lizards and horrendous fries, but The Golden Duck Co. knows how to play the game. The homegrown brand known for its own salted egg yolk snacks hopped on the bandwagon of ridiculing McDonald’s for its, er, questionable salted egg yolk fries — but with a bit more class and topical humor.

Without even mentioning the currently derided fast-food chain, Golden Duck posted their own meme on Facebook that incorporated the latest episode of Netflix’s Black Mirror series, Bandersnatch. It’s not just any episode though — Bandersnatch is an interactive experience that lets viewers control the choices the main character makes, very much like a cinematic choose-your-own-adventure game. No spoilers, but it does get pretty meta as the story unfolds. Pretty damn bleak too, but that’s classic Black Mirror for ya.

Golden Duck used the premise to deliver a delicious burn on McDonald’s though. The brand tells folks to choose wisely between “salted egg” (represented by McDonald’s fries) and “proper salted egg” (represented by a bag of Golden Duck snacks).

“If you know, you know,” Golden Duck wrote cheekily.

Different choices determine different endings in Bandersnatch (though pretty much all of them are dark as hell), and the same applies to Golden Duck’s game. Someone asked the brand what his ending would be.

The brand’s parody definitely plays better than Burger King Singapore’s own contribution to thrashing its competitor. Burger King encouraged folks who are let down by the salted egg fries to try a better alternative: Burger King’s $2.50 Cheese Fries. It would have been a fantastic burn… if Burger King was actually known for delivering amazing quality.
