‘Horrendous’: Singaporeans are completely trashing McDonald’s new salted egg yolk fries

McDonald’s localization team must be some of the most hard-working people in the fast-food business, bringing local flavors to the menu and causing a stir among Singaporeans (remember the Nasi Lemak Burger?).

Well, it seems that its latest, erm, “innovation” to bring the way-too-overexposed salted egg yolk flavour to its fries is not going down well with some Singaporeans.

After the fast-food chain launched the fries on Thursday along with a slew of localized options such as pandan ice cream, peach pie, and prawn paste chicken, people were quick to get on to social media to voice their approval or disapproval.

For those who did not like the new salted egg yolk creation, choice words given to the creation on Reddit’s Singapore thread included “salty”, “pungent” and “a dash of shattered dreams”. (Cue chuckle on the last one.)

Another disgruntled customer went to All Singapore Stuff’s Facebook page (aka the aggregator of Singapore complaints) and said that it looked “horrendous” and as if “someone spat on the fries”. Ouch.

One commenter summarised the dispute best:

Here’s where it gets a little tricky: apparently, some people do like the taste, such as this commenter on r/Singapore. Choice words given in this category include “isn’t that bad” (great description) and “doesn’t taste like salted egg yolk” (quite telling).

Leave it to local entrepreneurs like Justin Lim from Fish & Chicks to step in on McDonald’s Facebook page to show how it’s really done:

Although McDonald’s has yet to respond to the criticism, at least we know that McDonald’s is taking a serious look at customers who have complained of vomiting due to the fries.
