The father of twin boys found dead in a canal in Upper Bukit Timah was charged with a second count of murder this morning.

Xavier Yap Jung Houn, who appeared in court via video with a shaved head, was charged with the murder of his 11-year-old son Aston Yap Kai Shern weeks after the first was handed down for the death of Ethan Yap E Chern

The boys were found dead in an open canal near a secluded residential playground along Greenridge Crescent on Jan. 21.

The 48-year-old man was shortly arrested after and first charged on Jan. 24.

Speculation has swirled that the boys had special needs and attended a school in the Eng Kong estate area, but no confirmation has been forthcoming from the authorities.

Yap has been held at Changi Prison’s Complex Medical Centre for psychiatric observation. He was also brought back to the scene of the crime days after the incident to aid the investigation.

A police prosecutor told the court today that investigation is not yet complete, and medical reports are still pending.

The incident sent shockwaves through the nation, with many paying their respects in forms of flowers and candles placed at the canal, as well as a prayer session with the attendance of six leaders from their religious organizations.

Yap’s case has been adjourned to April 26 after a pre-trial conference in the High Court on April 12.

He faces the death penalty if found guilty of murder.
