After captivating the attention of Singaporeans when she earned a spot in Jay Chou’s team on Sing! China, local jazz singer Joanna Dong held her own in the TV singing competition and eventually came in third place at the final yesterday.

Unfortunately, that meant the 35-year-old just missed out on the grand finals, which saw Tibetan teacher Zhaxipingcuo from Liu Huan’s team and Chinese student Doris Guo Qin from Na Ying’s team battle it out, with the former emerging champion.

But still, it was a respectable effort by Dong, who is the second Singaporean to make it to the finals. She sang a medley of mentor Chou’s Simple Love and The Carpenters’ Top Of The World as a duet with her mentor on the first round, and received the most audience votes along with Guo.

Dong then belted out Applause by Feng Fei Fei in the next round, and was subsequently eliminated.

But rest assured this won’t be the last time you hear from her. Dong told The Straits Times that coming in third place in the competition has given her more confidence in pursuing a professional singing career.

Declaring that she will be spending her time going back and forth between Singapore and China to promote her brand of jazz, Dong said that her third place finish “already exceeded” her expectations.

“I think I did what I could, and I’m really happy to have been able to share my music with all the audiences – here in China, as well as back home in Singapore,” she told ST. “There is no need for disappointment, because unlike an actual sporting event, there is really no objective criteria for measuring music and, to me, to have been able to make it this far, I feel incredibly, incredibly fortunate already.”
