Just like last year, Singaporeans will have someone to cheer on at the Sing! China finals this year, thanks to local jazz singer Joanna Dong, who’s now the second Singaporean to make it this far in the TV singing competition.

On Friday’s episode 12, contestants from Team Jay Chou and Liu Huan battled it out for the coveted spot in the finals, which will be held on Oct 8 at the Beijing National Stadium.

First, 35-year-old Dong went up against fellow Singaporean Olinda Cho, 37, in a segment where both performed duets with Taiwanese singer Harlem Yu. Dong belted out Yu’s True Love Song, while Cho went for Chou’s Silence.

Check out Dong’s pipes.

After emerging victorious with 51 votes to Cho’s six, Dong crooned a mash-up of Open Arms and Lover’s Tears when she was pitted against Dabu from China, who sang Dear Friend.

She also beat him 36 to 15, according to the 51-person panel of judges made up of industry professionals. Their mentor, Chou, then scored Dong higher than Dabu, making her his choice to rep him in the finals. Next week, Dong will go face to face with four other finalists from the other teams — Doris Guo from Team Na Ying, Xiao Kaiye and Ye Xiaoyue from Team Eason Chan, and Zhaxipingcuo from Team Liu Huan.

The finals will be broadcast live on Sunday at 8:30pm on Jia Le Channel (Singtel TV Channel 502).
