Black Tap gets inspired by Singapore for its new chili crab sandwich and ‘Straits Shake’

Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer, the famous burger and milkshake joint from New York City, has only been in Singapore for a couple months, but it’s already seen enough of our island-nation to get inspired by our local flavors.

So the next time you’re in the vicinity of Marina Bay Sands, and you’re not quite in the mood for a cheeseburger, a fried chicken sandwich, or a massive chocolate shake, perhaps something a tad more familiar will do the trick.

Now on the menu, the new Chili Crab Sandwich ($25) is a spin on the seafood dish we’re most known for. But before you groan “not again” and move on, the rendition here is slightly different from the one you’re used to dipping your fingers in.

Sure, those fried mantous make an appearance, in miniature size with a side serving of chili crab sauce. But you’ve also got an entire soft shell crab, battered then fried, nestled comfortably on a potato bun, along with a side of coleslaw. So you could dip the burger in the sauce or pour it over the plate in generous doses — it’s really up to your preference.

To keep going on the local train, The Straits Shake ($22), named after the Singapore Straits, adds coconut cream and gula melaka (of course) to the original vanilla milkshake base. But it also gets a little nostalgic with toppings you don’t see as often these days. Pineapple jam biscuits, coconut butter biscuits, chocolate gems, and a pineapple popsicle are what transform the ordinary milkshake into a CrazyShake.

Oh, and if you were intrigued by ArtScience Museum’s new Wonderland exhibition when it debuted over the weekend, Black Tap is now offering a CrazyShake inspired by Alice and her adventures in Wonderland as well. Available for the run of the gallery show, the red and blue concoction is made up of a strawberry milkshake in a vanilla frosted glass decked out with white and blue pearl candies, sprinkles, a mushroom-shaped cupcake, an “Alice” cookie, rock candies, strawberry syrup, and puffs of whipped cream.
