2017 in review: Coconuts Singapore’s top 10 food stories of the year

Food is something that’s near and dear to our hearts – after all, we’re not known as a foodie nation for no reason. Good hawker grub, chill cafes, fine dining restaurants, hyped up trends, juicy scandals, cringe-worthy controversies… we’ve got it all.

Thanks again to Google’s analytics, we’ve rounded up the top 10 food stories that made the biggest splash this year – from one man who really, really loves KFC to the best airport food to a puny version of fish and chips. Read ‘em and recap.

One man’s persistent tweets gets KFC Singapore to bring back its classic Hot Devil Drumlets

This guy deserves a medal. One preferably made out of fried chicken. The hardcore fan of KFC’s Hot Devil Drumlets had such an all-consuming passion for the fast-food chain’s spicy chicken – which last set fire to our taste buds in 2014 – that he made it his mission to bring ‘em back.

After months of tirelessly nudging the folks at KFC – via Twitter, no less – his wish finally came true. What a great ending to a tale of true determination.

Load up on unlimited ribeye, wagyu and striploin at this steak buffet for under $30

People here sure love their steak. So you can’t go wrong with a steak buffet. But unlimited steaks for the low, low price of $29.90? That was almost too good to be true – and that’s probably why this story got so much attention.

Gourmet dining gone horribly wrong: LeVeL33’s fish and chips turns out to be 8 tiny fishes with 8 fries

Who would’ve thought that a restaurant could screw up good old fish and chips? Not to mention an atas one nestled at Marina Bay Financial Centre. Well, LeVeL33 probably said “challenge accepted” and went on to create its bizarre rendition, which featured eight potato strips and what eight tiny pieces of whitebait. Turns out, the dish was an appetizer, not a main course like the original poster insinuated.

Obviously, the photo went viral – even attracting the attention of Gordon Ramsay – and we all had a good laugh at it before the restaurant responded with its side of the story.

KFC Singapore launches Double Steamed Chicken burger, the healthier Double Down no one asked for

Looks like our readers really do love anything to do with KFC, ‘cause this announcement about KFC’s new menu addition really made y’all sit up and listen. But in a bad way.

The double steamed chicken burger – made of sauerkraut coleslaw, pickles, and sambal honey sauce sandwiched between steamed chicken fillets – appeared almost too nauseating to be true. Luckily, it turned out to be a prank and KFC thankfully launched the Zinger Double Down instead. Phew.

According to Anthony Bourdain, Changi Airport’s secret staff canteens have the best airport food

It goes without saying that Singapore’s Changi Airport is one of the best (if not the best) in the world. So when it comes to good, we’ve no lack of excellent options there. Even TV host/food connoisseur Anthony Bourdain agrees.

In an interview with The New York Times, the man revealed his favorite airport food (in the entire world, mind you) was at Changi Airport. Specifically, our “secret” staff canteens. Cheap and good never fails.

A new challenger appears: Balestier hawker stall sells whole roast ducks at $13.80 each

Speaking of cheap, one new stall named Duck Master at People’s Park Complex achieved viral fame this year for its $15 whole roast ducks. But wait, another challenger quickly appeared in the form of Jiu Xiang Xiang at Balestier, offering a lower price of $13.80.

We’re guessing a lot of ducks were consumed this year.

Goodbye nasi lemak burger, hello $22 lobster nasi lemak

On the other side of the price spectrum, the humble nasi lemak received a ton of attention this year – thanks to McDonald’s burger version, The Coconut Club’s atas $12.80 plate, and a $22 lobster rendition by Tampines eatery Lawa Bintang.

Halal food blogs find that nearly half the stalls at Geylang Serai’s Ramadan bazaar aren’t halal-certified or Muslim-owned

Loads of people flocked to the annual Geylang Serai Bazaar earlier this year, but the market’s biggest edition so far saw quality control a little… lacking.

Two halal food blogs took it upon themselves to check out all the stalls across the entire bazaar, and found that nearly half the vendors weren’t certified or verified as halal, neither were they owned by Muslims.

This cringey Popeyes ad featuring Amos Yee, Steven Lim, Naomi Neo and more is making rounds again

Oh, Amos Yee. So much has happened to the dude this year – if you haven’t heard, he’s made it to the US and has attained political refugee status there – but here’s a cringe-worthy Popeyes ad from when he was a kid. The clip, also starring Steven Lim and Naomi Neo, resurfaced on social media in April.

Sunset Grill & Pub slammed for remark about being non-Halal and hanging Confederate flag in premises

Another food-related controversy engulfed an eatery called Sunset Grill & Pub, which got slammed for its careless remarks about being proudly non-halal and its feature of a Confederate flag in its premises.

Needless to say, the pub got bombarded with one-star reviews on its Facebook page – the default reaction of Singaporeans.
