Here at Coconuts, we’re all too familiar with stories of dogs behaving weirdly. There were those two dogs who destroyed their master’s passport out of boredom. Then there was that canine who acted like a drama queen when his owner joked that he would replace him. But we don’t get that many chances to write about dogs being heroes. Luckily for us, today is one of those rare days.

Pio Abrenica, 67, a resident of the village of San Nicolas in Laoag City, was saved by his two dogs when he suffered a heart attack yesterday.

Abrenica’s nephew Johnsen Cristobal told police that his uncle owns two dogs, a 1-year-old Labrador retriever and a 6-month-old native mixed-breed dog (aka aspin).  Abrenica suffered a heart attack when he was at home and attempted to leave to seek help from his neighbors. He didn’t make it far, however, collapsing in the doorway.

Luckily, that alarmed both dogs, which promptly ran to a neighbor’s house and began barking non-stop, reported Abante Tonite.

That compelled the unidentified neighbor to bring the two dogs back to Abrenica’s home, where he found him sprawled on the ground, according to Bombo Radyo. The neighbor then rushed Abrenica to the Batac Medical Center for treatment. According to his doctor, Abrenica would not have survived the heart attack if he wasn’t brought to the hospital immediately.

Of course, none of this will come as a surprise to fans of the old Lassie series in the US.
